The short version

Barack Hussein Obama II served as the 44th President of the United States from 2009 to 2017, becoming the first African American to hold the office. A former community organizer and civil rights attorney, he represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate before his 2008 election. His presidency included the Affordable Care Act, the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, and a 2012 re-election.

In June 2026, the Obama Presidential Center opened in Chicago's Jackson Park — a 19.3-acre campus with a museum, the first fully digitized presidential library (built in partnership with the National Archives), a public forum, and a community athletic center, anchored by a granite tower engraved with lines from his 2015 Selma anniversary address.
